Should I Switch To A Heavier Dumbbell When Lifting Weights?

I decided to get back in shape and have been exercising for about a week and a half now. I lift a pair of 3lbs dumbbell in between three 20-minute cardio activity. Someone said I should switch to heavier weights after 2-3 weeks. Is it advisable. I'm not trying to bodybuild, but just trying to reduce my weight.

Go to the four pounders and do less reps for a few days. After you start feeling comfortable with them, start doing more reps. This small amount of weight is not going to make your arms huge but it will give you some muscle which will help you burn fat.

If you lift heavier dumbbells you will gain muscle and muscle weight 3 times more then fat if you are trying to tone light weight and high reps to reduce weight low dumbbell weights high reps

U do not have to go to a bigger weight. If U want to keep the same weights just increase the number of reps U do. Most people increase the weight when it becomes too easy because it helps to increases muscle mass & tone. It will help U reduce weight faster.

Once you feel comfortable with the weight you are lifting, increase the weight and lower the reps. After that increase the reps and then continue the cycle. Remember increasing muscle will burn fat!! Good luck!

Congrats on your decision to get back in shape.
Muscle responds best if it's at least a little difficult, the whole "no pain, no gain" is not the best advice to follow. To make 3lbs "seem" heavier, do the reps very slow, 3 seconds up and 3 seconds down. If that's to easy, lift a bit more, never increase by more than 10% a week though, it's a recipe for over doing it (at three pounds, a one pound increase is ok) Don't worry about getting a body building type look. My wife lifts heavy weight and still weighs less than a 100 lbs.
As far as reducing weight, there is only one way, that's to use more calories than you take in. Avoid the gimmicks and miracle type ads. Statistics show that these fad diets and pills just don't work in the long run.
Since it's been only a week and a half, you might get a little disappointed if results aren't quick. But think a year down the road. If you quit now, you'll never know what you could look like in that year. Believe me it's worth it.
